Makers are notoriously hard to buy for: they either already own the tool, or they want a very specific part you have never heard of. Glowing pixels are the exception. Almost every tinkerer with an ESP32, Arduino or Raspberry Pi eventually wants to build a pixel-art display, a desk clock, a game scoreboard or a notification panel, and LED matrices are the raw material for all of those. They are also forgiving gifts: even if the recipient already owns one panel, a second one usually means a bigger display.

This guide covers two families of LED panel, plus the humble connector kits that make wiring them tidy. Everything ships from AliExpress sellers, typically in 1–3 weeks; check each seller's rating and returns policy before ordering, and buy one spare panel if a project depends on it.

Addressable LED matrix

WS2812 LEDs (often called NeoPixels) each contain their own controller, so a whole panel runs from a single data pin. They are the easiest place to start.

WS2812 16x16 LED matrix

WS2812 16x16 LED matrix

Good for: First LED project

A 16x16 grid of 256 individually addressable RGB LEDs, running on about 5 V. It works with well-known libraries such as FastLED and WLED, and with Arduino, ESP32 or Raspberry Pi Pico boards, so someone can have scrolling text or animations running in an evening. At full white brightness 256 LEDs draw a lot of current, so a proper 5 V supply (not a laptop USB port) is needed for anything beyond dim effects.

HUB75 RGB panels for bigger displays

HUB75 panels are the same modules used in commercial video walls. The "P" number is the pixel pitch in millimetres: smaller means finer detail. They need a driver such as an ESP32 HUB75 shield or a Raspberry Pi with an RGB matrix HAT.

P2 RGB panel, 256x128 mm

P2 RGB panel, 256x128 mm

Good for: Close viewing

An indoor full-colour panel with a fine 2 mm pixel pitch, making it a dense display for a desk where it will be seen up close. Pixel art, weather dashboards and small video clips look crisp at this pitch. Very fine pitch panels can use less common scan patterns, so check that the recipient's driver library supports it before buying several.

P2.5 64x32 RGB panel

P2.5 64x32 RGB panel

Good for: Desk clocks

A 64x32 pixel HUB75 panel measuring 160x80 mm with 1/16 scan, a very common format with wide library support. It is the size many online tutorials use, and a sweet spot for clocks, stock tickers, now-playing displays and small game screens. Panels can be chained to make bigger displays later. It comes without a controller or power supply.

P4 64x32 RGB panel

P4 64x32 RGB panel

Good for: Scoreboards

The same 64x32 resolution as the P2.5 panel but physically larger at 256x128 mm, so it reads well from across a room. That makes it a good choice for scoreboards, workshop signs, game-room displays and wall-mounted dashboards, and two chained together make a striking banner. It is indoor-rated, so keep it away from damp garages and outdoor use.

Connector kits for tidy wiring

Unexciting, cheap and always in demand. Pre-crimped JST leads save hours of fiddly crimping with tiny terminals, and they make projects easier to take apart and repair. Add a pack to any LED gift and you have a thoughtful bundle.

JST SH 1.0 mm leads (10 pcs)

JST SH 1.0 mm leads (10 pcs)

Good for: Sensors and modules

Ten pre-wired JST SH connectors with 1.0 mm pitch, the tiny plug used by many sensor breakouts, Qwiic/STEMMA QT boards and drone electronics. You choose the pin count and wire length when ordering. Make sure the pin count matches what the recipient uses; 4-pin is the most common for I2C sensor boards.

Before you buy

  • HUB75 panels need a 5 V supply rated for several amps per panel. A phone charger will not do; a dedicated 5 V supply with headroom is essential.
  • None of these panels include a microcontroller. Check the recipient has an ESP32, Arduino or Raspberry Pi, or add one to the gift.
  • WLED (for WS2812) and the rpi-rgb-led-matrix library (for HUB75) are free, popular starting points with good documentation.
  • For a budget bundle, see our geek gifts under $25. Makers who love radio may also enjoy the SDR gift guide.
  • Plan the build together. A 64x32 panel, an ESP32 and a 5 V supply make a complete clock or now-playing display; a WS2812 matrix and a microcontroller make a pixel-art frame.
  • Diffusers transform the look. A sheet of tinted acrylic or even baking paper in front of a panel softens individual LEDs into smooth pixels.
  • Bright LEDs at full power get warm. Give panels some airflow and do not seal them in tight enclosures.
